Architectural Competition for the main public square of Limassol (Plateia Herown) 2020

 2ND PRIZE WITH NO FIRST PRIZE

The project organizes the square based on a "clever" ground that operates as a web of infrastructures to support social and ecological everyday processes. It builds at the same time on the complex collective memory of the space dating back to the Kioseoglou era, on the existing uses of the square as well as on practices to confront consequences of climate change. The rainy periods are reduced but the intensity of raindrop is increasing causing many floodings. The project entitled "Everyday heroes square", paraphrasing the actual name of the square, Heroes square, reconfigures ways with which a public space reveals hidden everyday practices of Limassol. It enriches the existing landmarks of the square, such as the Heroes monument with its lampposts, the exterior space of Rialto cultural space as well as the kiosks and their micro-environments. The project formulates support structures for the collective governance of the square and its surrounding neighbourhood.

Η πρόταση οργανώνει το χώρο της πλατείας με βάση ένα «έξυπνο» δάπεδο που λειτουργεί ως πλέγμα υποδομών για κοινωνικές και οικολογικές διεργασίες. Κτίζει ταυτόχρονα πάνω στη πολυσύνθετη συλλογική μνήμη του χώρου από την εποχή των Κιοσέογλου, πάνω στις υφιστάμενες χρήσεις της πλατείας αλλά και σε πρακτικές για την αντιμετώπιση πτυχών της κλιματικής αλλαγής, όπου συρρικνώνονται οι βροχερές περίοδοι αλλά μεγαλώνει η ένταση της βροχόπτωσης με συχνές πλημμύρες. Η πρόταση με τίτλο «πλατεία καθημερινών ηρώων», επαναδιατυπώνει τρόπους με τους οποίους ένας δημόσιος χώρος αναδεικνύει κρυμμένες πρακτικές της καθημερινότητας της Λεμεσού. Εμπλουτίζει τα υφιστάμενα ορόσημα της πλατείας, που είναι το μνημείο Ηρώων με τα φωτιστικά του, ο εξωτερικός χώρος εισόδου στο Ριάλτο, και τα κιόσκια με τα μικρο-περιβάλλοντα τους. Προτείνει ταυτόχρονα δομές για συλλογική διαχείριση της πλατείας και της ευρύτερης περιοχής.
